Д анашњи размештај и етничка структура становништв а Источне Србије су резултат снажног деловања миграционих кретања у прошлости, односно досељавања нових етничких маса које су у процесима адаптације и асимилације са староседелачким становништвом дале нова социо - културна обележја овом делу Србије. Источна Србија већ више од једног века непрекидно губи популациону снагу. Узроци депопулације Источне Србије нису једноставни и једнообразни, и крећу се у широком распону, између специфичности демографског развитка са једне стране, и чиниоца, интензитета и праваца друштвено - историјског и социо - економског развоја са друге стране, као и њихове међузависности и веза. Неповољни демографски процеси у Источној Србији имају своју предисторију и почели су да се јављају раније него што су евидентирани као демографски пробле м, док неки њихови узроци сежу у далеку прошлост, па је неопходно и научно оправдано да их данас посматрамо дугорочно у оној мери колико нам то омогућавају извори података. Зато је циљ овог рада утврђивање и научно аргументовано објашњење етнодемографских карактеристика и специфичности демографског развитка Источне Србије. У том смислу , главни задаци истраживања су разматрање историјског наслеђа и савремених проблема демографског развитка, научно сагледавање демографских и недемографских утицаја на успостав љање и формирање демографских трендова и токова демографске транзиције, временско датирање и просторно детерминисање појава и последица биолошке депопулације, установљавање фаза, стадијума и последица демографског старења, као и научна анализа међузависнос ти развитка становништва и простора на коме је оно настањено...
