A critical edition of the Julius Valerius’ Epitome, edited by a German philologist Julius Zacher (1816–1887). Julius Valerius Alexander Polemius (3rd to 4th century AD) was a translator of the Greek Pseudo-Callisthenes, the romantic history of Alexander the Great, to the Latin Res gestae Alexandri Macedonis. His work is important in connection with the transmission of the Alexander romance in the Middle Ages. Epitome is in the 9th century summarized Julius Valerius’ Latin translation of Pseudo-Callisthenes, and it was the principal source of the medieval French Roman d’Alexandre.
