Ulrich von Etzenbach (13th century, known also as Ulrich von Eschenbach), a Bohemian by birth, was a learned commoner who wrote two substantial Middle High German verse works (Alexandreis and Wilhelm von Wenden). He was active at the courts of the Bohemian kings Ottokar II and Wenzel II. Ulrich began his Alexandreis, one of the many medieval versions of the Alexander romance, c. 1271, intending it as a glorification of Ottokar II. The poem, which contains about 30.000 verses, was finished c.1287, long after Ottokar's death. Its main source was Alexandreis of Walter of Châtillon. Alexander is portrayed as the ideal ruler, and the depiction of court and military life is done in terms of the Middle Ages.
