<dc:description xml:lang="eng">This dissertation explores language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 2002. Itis based on scientific principles of sociolinguistics. Language policy is defined in this paper asorganized government activity in the language field that is closely connected to linguistic, sociolinguistic, and political contexts. Given the complexity of linguistic issues in this region, twopolicies are analyzed simultaneously–proclaimed, i.e., explicit language policy, and implicit, i.e.,language policy in practice, along with all its characteristics. A significant portion of the paper isdevoted to the history of language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e., examining language duringthe Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, the Kingdom ofYugoslavia, Socialist Yugoslavia, and the period before the war. This examination aims at setting upthe historical, political, and linguistic contexts vital for an objective and scientific understanding oftoday’s situation. This applies primarily to the period after 1866. It refers to the Austro-Hungarianoccupation and annexation at the onset of political manipulation of language that worsened in everynew political system. The core of the paper is an analysis of separate language policies of the Republicof Srpska, Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Herzeg-Bosnia, and then language policies ofthe Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The year 1992 marked boththe definite dissolution of the former socialist country and the end of a common language policy, while the year 2002 was marked by another change in the relationship between the three communities. This change was significantly affected by pressure from the international community. Forming threeseparate communities in this region meant the beginning of intensive work on linguistic issues, whichincluded defining the language status in official use, media, and education and the language corpus. In a broader sense, the paper touches upon the language policies of Serbia and Croatia. Examiningthree different language policies in three separate periods is related to the language policycharacteristics of each community and the dependency of those policies on general historical andpolitical events in the country. It also shows shortcomings that caused the most damage to the languagein use. Our analyses show that language has been a subject of political manipulation since thebeginning of language standardization in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We concluded that the currentlanguage policy results from the permanent subordination of linguistic criteria to the political ones. From 1992 to 2002, the society completed the unfinished historical processes in which language policywas in accordance with the political ideology and not with the convictions of the speakers.</dc:description>
