<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Abstract: In Pekic's novel The Time of Miracles, Christ is presented as an utter opposite of his religious essence.
Miracles that he performs belong to the group which S. Bulgakov denotes as false. Christ's whole nature is
minimized to the phenomenon of miracle-working, representing just a mere performance of magic to enable
the victory of dogmas and the replacement of the old system by a new one. In this work, Christ is like an
office worker who makes miracles on written request. What is insisted on in most miracles is the total ban of
freedom of choice of the one who receives the miracle-working. As a result, it appears that individuals ought
to be sacrificed for the sake of the system On the grounds of the writer's statements in interviews it is obvious
that the aim of his work is to present the time and political regime he lived using Aesopian language of a kind;
however, the meaning of the work itself must not be reduced to that alone. The writer's diary (1955-1959)
documents on the problematic issue of human freedom at it is, as well as on confrontation with any kind of
system forced on individuals in order to reduce their freedom. Baring in mind that Pekic read Solovyov and
Berdyaev, it is believed that the writer was not against Christianity as religion, but against theocracy, which
reduced freedom guaranteed by Christianity. For a more accurate interpretation of The Time of Miracles, an abstract from the writers diary (1959) entitled ”The prolegomenon to a new definition of the 'absurd'” has
be taken into account, since the consideration of Judas leads to a stance on the freedom of man in general –
freedom is purposeful only when it coincides with fate, and it is therefore that every possibility of free choice
is missing. Finally, it is possible to say that the purpose of Pekic's novel The Time of Miracles is to witness
about a time, but it also raises the subject of the absurd, of freedom and fate.</dc:description>
