o:30013 Metonymic and metaphoric extensions of the expression “keep an eye on somebody/something Metonymische und metaphorische erweiterungen des ausdrucks “keep an eye on somebody/something” en Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the expression “keep an eye on” in COCA data base with the intention to find out what the extended constructions are. The example analysis shows that the metonymy concept eye for watching is present in the sentences where an animate noun is the object. In the examples with inanimate nouns an additional metonymy concept watching is attention is observed. This semi-fixed expression can be extended by a modifier. If it is an adjective (“keep + an + adjective + eye + on”) a blend of metonymy and metaphor (metaphtonymy) may be noted. However, this is not the case in the examples where the modifier is a noun. This is in agreement with the findings of other linguists. Zusammenfassung: Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird der Phraseologismus “keep an eye on“ untersucht, wobei besonders die Varianten mit einem Modifikator vor dem Substantiv “eye“ in den Fokus der Untersuchung gerückt werden. Das metonymische Konzept das Auge ist sehen ist in allen Sätzen präsent, in denen das Substantiv ein Lebewesen darstellt. In den Beispielen, in denen das nicht der Fall ist (das Substantiv kein Lebewesen ist), kann eine doppelte Metonymie festgestellt werden: Derselbe Ausdruck enthält auch das metonymische Konzept sehen ist Aufmerksamkeit. Dieser Ausdruck kann durch einen Modifikator erweitert werden. Falls es sich um einen adjektivischen Modifikator handelt (keep + an + adjective + eye + on), kommt es zur Verschmelzung von Metapher und Metonymie (Metaphtonymie). Erscheint ein Substantiv in der Funktion des Modifikators, gilt dies jedoch nicht. Dieses Forschungsergebnis entspricht den Schlussfolgerungen der Linguisten, die sich mit Somatismen in Phraseologismen auseinandergesetzt haben.
