<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Abstract: Etymological word structure is rarely systematically taken into account in cognitive linguistic study of metaphor. In this study taken from the perspective of the conceptual metaphor theory, we are concerned with metaphors in the conceptual representation of the domain of cognition in the etymology of prefixed Latinisms in Serbian. Thus we identify metaphors whose source concepts correspond to the (disactualized) etymological meanings, while their target concepts correspond to the actual meanings of Latinisms. Their relations to conceptual metaphors actual today, which we find in cognitive linguistic literature and/or for which we find linguistic instances in (contemporary) synchrony, are also being established. The evidence for the identified conceptual metaphors from diachrony and synchrony suggests that these metaphors developed independently in different languages, times and communities, and, thus, that they could be universal</dc:description>
