The subject of research of this doctoral dissertation is pointing at the subordinate position of three heroines of the Victorian novel: Becky Sharp, Maggie Tulliver and Tess Durbeyfield. The basic hypothesis of this thesis is that these characters were thwarted by rigid Victorian society. By means of the method of interpretation, analytically-synthetic, sociological and biographic method we have attempted to prove that gender is what discriminates our heroines.XIX century stands for the period when women became aware of their inferior position. The emancipation of women was considered potentially dangerous because it threatened to destabilize the whole order. The society which favorized the form and the appearance of morality was on the best terms with women who conformed to the rules. Therefore Becky Sharp, cunning and manipulative, is the best reflection of the spirit of the era. Becky seemingly accepts the strict moulds and labels, but actually lurks an opportunity to turn the commodification of women in her favour. The implication is that the Victorian society was the harshest towards women who aspired to achieving their individuality. Maggie Tulliver and Tess Durbeyfield do not pose a danger because they did something immoral at some point. What arises suspicion is the fact that they did not agree to compromise in crisis situations. Maggie and Tess do their best to thwart the attempt of their surroundings to interpret their words and actions through the prism of gender and class stereotypes. Although these heroines did not accept the role of the paradigmatic victim, it all comes to the conclusion that they were sacrificed by their society. Not before they die do their morality and innocence become obvious.
