Scientific knowledge on differences between perceived and physical reality in domain of multisensory perception is presented through numerous phenomena. An example of such phenomenon that plays a main role in this study is the anisotropy of perceived distance. In previous studies, the emphasis was on considering the impact of visual and proprioceptive information (neck muscles) on expression of this phenomenon. Therefore, as the main contribution of this study to the exploration of the anisotropy of perceived distance we saw examination of the vestibular information as well as proprioceptive information of the arm muscles. By varying the type of task (guidance or reproduction), we changed the amount of proprioceptive information available to the respondents when estimating the distance of the stimulus (from the neck muscles or from the neck and arm muscles). By including three groups of respondents in the study, we varied the (non)availability of vestibular information (available – the general population, unavailable for a long time - deaf , currently unavailable - the general population stimulated by galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS)). By changing the position of respondents when estimating the distance, we varied two frames of reference for determining viewing direction (ground or observer’s body). Therefore, as part of the study, we conducted a total of 6 experiments organized in relation to the group of respondents and the type of task. Within each experiment, there were three experimental situations that differed in the position of the respondents' bodies (sitting, supine position or prone position). Bearing in mind that the respondents changed the position of the body when estimating the distance in the analysis of the results, we defined the directions in relation to the body of the respondent: subjective vertical up (direction above the head), subjective vertical down (direction toward the foot) and subjective horizontal (direction in front of respondent at eye level). The first obtained results of the study indicate that in the guidance task (experiment 1) and motor reproduction task (experiment 2) the respondents (general population) almost consistently perceived distances localized on the subjective vertical up as longer, while the distances on the subjective vertical down as shorter than physically equal distances localized on the subjective horizontal. These results lead us to the conclusion that the effect of anisotropy of the perceived distance exists in the peripersonal space as it exists in the extrapersonal space. Namely, whether the respondents guide the experimenter (1st experiment) or reproduce the distance themselves (2nd experiment), the effect of anisotropy exists in all body positions. Observing the findings from the level of multisensory integration of visual, proprioceptive and vestibular information, one gets the impression of the importance of all the named information for preserving the anisotropy effect. However, differences in the anisotropy effect between tasks exist only in the sitting position. Namely, in the motor reproduction task the respondents perceive the subjective vertical up as longer than the subjective horizontal, in relation to the guidance task. This indicates the importance of proprioceptive information, from the arm muscles, on the anisotropy effect. In the following experiments, we aimed to examine the contribution of vestibular information to the occurrence of the anisotropy phenomenon. Experiments with deaf respondents (which are deemed to have long-term compensation for the deprivation of vestibular function) indicate that regardless of whether distances are reproduced in the guidance task (experiment 3) or in the motor reproduction task (experiment 4), the results are consistent. Namely, in the sitting position and the supine position, the respondents perceived the distance on the subjective vertical up as longer than the same distance on the subjective horizontal, just as in the supine position the distance on the subjective vertical down is perceived as shorter than the same distance on the subjective horizontal. In all other positions, regardless of the task, the respondents perceived the distances in the examined directions as equal. Having in mind that the anisotropy effect occurs only on directions that include the physical vertical to the zenith and the physical horizontal, the findings unequivocally indicate the importance of vestibular information when estimating the distance of an object. These results lead us to the question on what additional information do deaf respondents relie on, in addition to visual and proprioceptive, so that the effect of anisotropy can only occur in a direction that involves estimating distance in a direction opposite to the gravity? Our explanation assumed the inclusion of information about hydrostatic pressure, activation of a particular groups of neck and arm muscles, as well as about the position of the wrist, in the multisensory integration. In final experiments, we intended to examine the effect of short-term deprivation of vestibular information by GVS on the effect of anisotropy of perceived distance. The results show that the respondents consistently perceive the distance on the subjective vertical up as longer and distance on the subjective vertical down as shorter than the same one on the subjective horizontal, in almost all body positions in the guidance task (5th experiment) and the motor reproduction task (6th experiment). The only exception is the prone position when respondents observed the distances on the subjective vertical down as equal to the subjective horizontal, in both tasks. In these experiments, we also assumed that respondents, in addition to visual and proprioceptive information, also relied on information on the value of hydrostatic pressure, the position of the wrist, the activation of the neck and arm muscles. All of the findings listed indicated importance of vestibular information in coordination with visual and proprioceptive information for existence of the anisotropy of perceived distance. The analysis of additional information helps to preserve the anisotropy effect when some of the usually available information is missing.
