Yugoslavia, Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Archives of Serbia,
Military Archives in Belgrade, Historical Archives of Belgrade, and Bulgarian
Historical Archives and Central State Archives in Sofia, as well as on published
documents of Yugoslav, Bulgarian, Czechoslovakian, Italian, German, British and
Soviet provenance, diaries and memoirs, press and periodicals, and relevant literature.
The main objective was comprehensive reconstruction of Yugoslav Foreign
Policy in the Balkans and Danubian region in order to understand the key guidelines
and concepts and to determine the international position of the Yugoslav state in
relation to other regional actors. The topic is processed with chronological and thematic
research approach. The chronological boundaries were determined at the beginning of
the Locarno Period and with the signing of the Munich Agreement. The Balkan and
Danubian region have been selected thematically as they provide analyze of Yugoslav
behavior in relation to several actors, and relations in the Adriatic region were solely
bilateral.
The Balkan policy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia SCS / Yugoslavia was based
on the policies of the former Kingdom of Serbia, while the Danubian policy was
developed after the First World War. In the first region, Yugoslavia had a dominant
position and the potential to lead the Balkan states, yet one of the leader’s
responsibilities was to help Balkan peoples to overcome their difficult historical
heritage. In the second region, all countries were in a completely new situation since the
roles were transposed. The peoples that had a dominant position became inferior and
isolated, and once subordinated nations have had an opportunity to create their own
policies in the region. Yet, some of the Great Powers were ardent to play major role in
those regions. Yugoslav state primarily encountered Italian pretensions throughout the
observed period and sought for modus vivendi with Adriatic neighbor in order to
preserve peaceful development of relations. Yugoslavia was counterbalancing pressure
through cooperation with other Great Powers. At first, Yugoslav statesmen were
7
seeking support from France and when international situation has changed their second
choice was Great Britain. Nevertheless, they did not hesitate to use conflict of Italian-
German interest in Danubian region to strengthen national security of Yugoslavia</dc:description>
