У првом дијелу рада, након Увода, представљамо концизну културну историју тзв. „готске фикције“. „Готика“ је суштински везана за једну „просвијећену“ перцепцију средњег вијека и феудалне, католичке прошлости. Готска перспектива увијек подразумијева неки облик „еманципаторског“ становишта са којег се вјерске, политичке и епистемолошке форме прошлости могу појавити као нешто „анахроно“ и неразумљиво, а самим тим и као пријетеће и „мрачно“... The analysis of Gothic motifs in the prose of Flannery O'Connor can provide us with important insights into the key features of O'Connor's poetics. The exploration of this thesis unfolds in several directions. In the first part of this disertation, after the Introduction, a concise cultural history of the so-called ''Gothic fiction" is presented. The Gothic is essentially tied to an "enlightened", emancipatory perception of the Middle Ages and of the feudal, Catholic past. Gothic perspective always implies some form of "emancipatory" viewpoint from which religious, political and epistemological forms of the past may appear as something "anachronous" and incomprehensible, and therefore both threatening and "dark"...
