Islamski učitelji kažu da hadžija treba da predstavlja izraz odanosti Bogu, ne sredstvo za zadobijanje društvenog statusa. Vernik bi trebalo da bude samosvestan i da istražuje namere tokom trajanja hodočašća. To bi trebalo da dovede do neprestane težnje ka samousavršavanju. Hodočašće koje se izvede u neko drugo doba, a ne u vreme hadžiluka, naziva se umra i nije obavezno, ali je krajnje preporučljivo.
