Најстарија српска (црквена) библиотека, која није припадала никаквом манастиру или цркви, јесте Архиепископско-митрополитска-патријарашка библиотека, познатија под називом Патријаршијска библиотека (сада са седиштем у Београду). Она представља најстарију савремену библиотеку уопште код Срба, а по континуитету постојања стоји међу првима у региону. Њени фондови су се уобличавали, формирали и организовали као дворско књигохранилиште поглавара Карловачке митрополије и Српске православне цркве преко 300 година. Полазећи од хипотеза: да је знање којим данас располажемо о три века рада Патријаршијске библиотеке фрагментарно и са недовољно утемељеним провереним подацима; да постоји довољно архивске и рукописне грађе, која се може у неким деловима употпунити, а у другим потпуно променити слику о њеном историјском развоју; да изучавање њене укупне историје и организације није никада била тема једног научног рада; да ова врста аналитичко-синтетичких истраживања ствара темељ за промену постојећег стања и даје одговоре за њено библиотечко-инфромативно организационо унапређење; и да је у свету делатност црквених библиотека развијена као посебна грана библиотекарства, сматрали смо да је од велике важности да проговоримо о њеном значају у историји Срба од почетка 18. до почетка 21. века... The establishment of libraries in recent Serbian cultural history has begun in the first half of XVIII century in regions under Austro-Hungarian rule. The oldest Serbian (Church) library, which did not belong to a specific monastery or a church, is The Archiepiscopal-Metropolitan-Patriarchal Library, better known as The Patriarchal Library (now seated in Belgrade). It represents the oldest modern Serbian library and, as far its continuity is concerned, one of the first in this region. Its funds have been gradually formed and organized as court book storage of metropolitans of Karlovci and patriarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church during more than 300 years. Proceeding from the facts that our knowledge about the three hundred years long development of the Patriarchal Library is fragmentary and based on insufficiently grounded and verified data, that there still exists a large quantity of archive and manuscript material that could in certain ways supplement and in others completely change the picture of its historical development, that studying of its history and organization has never been the subject of any scientific research, that this type of analytical-synthetic research could create foundation for changing the existing situation and give solutions for its better librarian-informatics organization, and that the activity of church libraries is in many countries developed as separate branch of library science, we concluded that it would be of utmost importance to present the significance of the Patriarchal Library in Serbian history from the beginning of XVIII century till the beginning of XXI century...
